Marwan 1934 Damas, Syria - 2016 Berlin, Germany

A leading figure on the contemporary Arab art scene, Marwan is appreciated for his figurative work, in particular for the concept of “face-landscape”, a term coined by the Syrian poet Adonis.

Born in Damascus, Marwan studied Arabic literature before moving to Germany at the age of 23. In Berlin, he studied painting at the Hochschule der Bildende Künste and discovered Expressionism through his teacher Hann Trier. In the 1960s, alongside the German painter Georg Baselitz, he took part in the New Figuration movement, which sought to establish a ‘third way’ in the face of the two hegemonic pictorial trends, abstraction and new realism.

From the 1970s onwards, he embarked on a repetitive, or archaeological exploration of the human head, which became a subject in its own right, seen as a constantly renewed landscape. Very soon it was his own face that became the focus of his experimentation. Using a small but powerful palette, a free and nervous touch, and accommodating both small and monumental formats, Marwan has left an astonishing record of an obsessive quest for the human soul.

Marwan's work can be seen in all major museums, including the Tate Modern (London), the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), the Städel Museum (Frankfurt), the Guggenheim (Abu Dhabi), the Barjeel Art Foundation Collection, Darat al Funun (Amman) and many others.

Arab Presences | Modern Art and Decolonization. Paris 1908–1988

05 April - 25 August 2024

Paris , France

The Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris invites us to rediscover the diversity of Arab modernities in the 20th century and to renew our historical perspective on artistic scenes that are still little known in Europe. Through a selection of more than 200 works, most of which have never been exhibited in France, the exhibition “Présences arabes – Art moderne et décolonisation – Paris 1908-1988” highlights the relationship between Arab artists and Paris throughout the 20th century.

Conference by Nagham Hodaifa at the Giacometti Foundation - 19 November 2025
The gallery is delighted to announce a conference by Nagham Hodaifa, an artist and researcher we proudly represent, taking place on November 19, 2025 at the Giacometti Foundation in Paris. Her presentation will be dedicated to the work of MARWAN, an artist with whom we had the pleasure of collaborating in 2015.

The Face as a Fundamental Question

At the heart of this conference lies an essential inquiry shared by both MARWAN and Giacometti: What is a face? What is a head? For each of them, the head becomes a space of investigation — a place where presence, emotion and the human condition converge.
Nagham Hodaifa will highlight decisive moments in MARWAN’s artistic journey, particularly his work from the 1960s, renowned for its powerful expressiveness and extraordinary richness of drawing. She will also present materials drawn from her long-term research and from the in-depth conversations she conducted with the artist during the last decade of his life, including insights that have never before been made public.

In Dialogue with the Exhibition “GIACOMETTI / MARWAN OBSESSIONS”

This conference accompanies the exhibition running from October 21, 2025 to January 25, 2026, which stages an unprecedented dialogue between Giacometti and MARWAN. The exhibition highlights their parallel investigations of the head while revealing the distinctive approaches shaped by their different cultural and artistic contexts.
The November 19 event will therefore offer a thoughtful and illuminating perspective on this artistic encounter, guided by the sensitive eye of an artist and researcher who knew MARWAN’s work intimately.
